“…Self-portraiture reflects not only a personal journey, but also a common experience of women who feel consciously aware of what they should pursue or speak up about, but feel impotent in the face of a dominant power: unequal relationships, demons residing in the subconscious, societal expectations and especially the disappearance of relevancy with encroaching age."
The Fine Art Self-Portrait Photography by Susan Borowitz will keep you locked in and take you on an adventure! “Locked-In" is a self-portrait series by Fine Art Photographer, Susan Borowitz. It is also the name of the Online Solo Exhibition presented and curated by Self Portraits On Fire, which will run from May 3 - June 3, 2024. Subconscious discoveries via surreal storytelling, the process of photographic image making, and the creativity that sparks Susan's inner world, inspires the everyday viewer — especially the everywoman — to reflect on her own subconscious journey and empowered state of mind.
Susan photographs her self-portraits on location, which she scouts from thorough research. Despite the accessibility of the location or weather conditions, Susan has traversed to: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Spain, Thailand, Dubai, Romania and Kazakhstan. With an open mind, her camera, props, and wardrobe in hand, Susan prepares the photographic specifications and adapts to the outdoor environment. Utilizing the natural light around her, Susan nurtures a vicarious relationship between subject and director. A non-linear, yet instinctual process, Susan’s imaginative characters influence the story of the destination and vice versa.
Susan’s self-portrait series is more than just satirical commentary. The technical aspects and the playful overtones in Susan’s self-portrait photographs, reflect feminist messages for personal, social, and societal reforms; the dormancy of inner thoughts, feelings, ideas, desires, and shared experiences awaken the need to ignite a chain reaction of opening up one's agency, voice, and truths. As Susan discloses, “…Each and every photograph is an adventure and each one tells a story behind the story….I love that there’s a secret joke in the series: it’s about being stuck, but I’m traveling all over the world to create it.”
“…I have since focused on the subconscious and psychological journeys in my art, using self-portraiture as a stand-in for the everywoman, as well as a reflection of my own experience….the most important goal for me is to create images that resonate with people who view them—especially other women who may see themselves in my everywoman—and give them a sense that they aren’t alone, that we all have demons that we battle.”
