"For me as a photographer, the magic lies within breaking free from the expected order of things, and simply capturing my feelings whatever they may be at any given moment."
Ings' self-portrait photography deviates from the traditional notions of capturing a photographic image. By simply utilizing what exists around her, she captures what exists within her -- raw and palpable emotion. The Aqua Di Ings Series, which is shot on a 9:16 reel format ratio, uses a single light source, a reflective wet surface, and the motion of her body. According to Ings, "It's a form of expression that isn't confined by technicalities and polished methods. In my photographic journey, I do my best to stray away from the standard rules of photography, which introduces a cheeky and artsy detail to every frame, radiating a variety that could never be achieved by any rigid or strict set up." By liberating herself from the picturesque fundamentals of photography, Ings does not limit or confine her creative abilities. She creates her own rules by embracing intuition as her guide.
What may appear as flaws in her images, are unabashed transient shifts based on the artist's own emotional instincts. Thus, the enigmatic quality and photographic style of Ings' self-portraits should not be overlooked. The mystifying contrast between light and shadow, radiates a complex intensity deep beneath the artist's own surface. The semi-obscured abstraction of Ings' face and body in each frame reveals an emotional clarity of a mind and body in motion. As Ings best states, "Photography, in literal translation, means 'to capture light,' but to me, it transcends this direct interpretation."
